I think you're right. It's called 'Second System Syndrome'...when
you change from one software package to another that does the same
things, it's always hard to get used to the new one because you
tend to continue to try to do things the old way.

I work with people who use paint programs for a very large fraction
of their working lives - and they use The GIMP even on machines
running Windows with Photoshop available!

I think though that the thrust of GIMP is somewhat slanted towards
professional users - where Photoshop has more chrome for the occasional
user. The Red Eye Removal button is a classic example of that.

You can do Red Eye removal using GIMP - but using the standard features.
(eg Select by colour, click on an eye, adjust the sensitivity until you
have just the eyes, click open the Fill panel - select 'Hue' mode - then
fill with whatever colour of eyes your subjects had.)

If you do red-eye removal on such a regular basis that these extra
mouse clicks are a problem - then you can easily make a script...however,
if you don't do it 20 times a day - then that kind of chrome just clutters
up the menu's for serious users who'd want more than the canned effect
that Photoshop offers.

(Having said that - I bet there's a GIMP plugin to do that somewhere).
