Why the emphasis on "shipping a kernel"?  Most distributions "ship" a
default kernel, but the source is easy enough to obtain, and patch if
need be, so what does it matter wheather RH or whoever never "shipped" a
kernel that supported one thing or another?  Are there corporate
customers who (1) have the kind of expensive hardware we're talking
about, and (2) never compile their own kernels?

It's probably pretty clear I've never used software in a corporate
setting.
