GAIM works great for me as well.
Also, they've ported it to Windows. Pretty stable on win2k. It's really 
starting to become a nice, stable package even on Windows.
Note however, that any IM that's not written by AIM will experience 
problems whenever AIM decides to change their protocol. GAIM is one of 
the fastest out there to commit fixes. (Trillian is kinda slow by 
comparison. They want you to buy their full version.)

GAIM also supports a taskbar system icon in KDE. (Works well on KDE3, 
not sure about other versions.)
