I have been using GENTOO for over 8-10 months now and I dont have any
complaints. Infact i would say it was better than the RPM experience.
THe downside is that it took me over 48-72 hrs to have the system setup,
but no downtime after the initial setup.. Gentoo offers binaries too for
a quick install(~ to redhat)..
I've an inspiron 8200 and both the track ball and the touchpad and a
ps-2 mouse works alrite. I have my screen resolution at 1400x1050 and
satisfied with it.. and I have tested earler for 1280x1024 and it was
perfect. I had 1280x1024 as the *first* mode. as in

Its great for learning gnu/linux too as u would have to configure the
system manually and things dont happen *magically* as is the case in
windows and redhat.
regarding the browser - maybe u want to try out firebird.. its nice.
especially if u dont use mozilla's mail client..
good luck..
