Gaim is nice for keeping up with the protocol changes.  Jabber is even
better if you can find a jabber server that keeps up with the changes for
you.  I don't see anyway with the latest Gaim to do file transfers (they
say it's buggy/incomplete).  I think Gnomeicu is better for supporting icq
specifically.
