On the boot line, try "vga=normal" and see if that helps.  In the perfect 
world, that should cause it to boot in text mode, then you can "startx" after 
you login.  That will allow you try/test/try/test/... various things, and if 
the video driver really is the problem, will just drop you back to the command 
line at the worst.
