I believe the flurry was associated with LinuxTag (or some other European
Linux conference during the summer).

Not exactly. "NewWorld" class PowerMacs include the iMac and all machines
released after it. "OldWorld" class PowerMacs are the PCI bus based
versions prior to the iMac. The main difference for Linux users is
whether the machine can boot from a non-MacOS blessed partition. OldWorld
machines can not - NewWorld machines can.
