It could just be a bad drive. I had 3 bad SATA WD
drives in a row before I switched brands. You can try
fsck on your GNU/Linux machine and also try doing a
bad sector scan on it (if you can put it in another
machine for a while). If it works on the other
machine, it could be your IDE controller.
