[NTLUG:Discuss] looking for opensource chat server & discussion board/groups apps

Can someone reccomend apps for a  chat server (and
client), and discussion boards/groups?

I am planning to use these on a website i am
developing. I believe the webhost is running Linux ,
but not sure of the distribution.

I have found several apps on sourceforge that would
probably work but i am not familiar with any of them.
