Sounds like it is running a sound daemon (artsd or something) that is grabbing 
the device and not letting go.  Do a "ps -ef" and look at all the processes; 
hopefully the one you want to kill will be obvious.  Or next time, do the ps 
before you start win4lin and save that to a file, then a ps after you finish 
with it and see what "extra" processes you have; you'll want to kill those 
(assuming you haven't started other shells and things you do want to keep. :-)
