Additional information:
I got my PPP dialer (KPPP) on Linux to connect, my login was successful, 
and so was IP assignment - a good 42.6 K on a 56K modem line.  Login was 
confirmed my the administrator.  But the connection wouldn't route 
anywhere - that is, it was completely useless.
