I usually start with a default install, then go
through the package list and select things that I
might find interesting and take off packages that I
definitely will not use (assembly compiler).
I'm not sure about Mandrake, but I'm almost positive
it will check for dependencies on your selected
packages so it will automatically install everything
you need.
Yes, you will need to take all the packages in mind
from a security perspective. If you install and turn
on services make sure you at least secure them and
have them protected w/ a firewall. Also, you will
need to run periodic package updates to keep them
patched. Again, I'm not sure about Mandrake, but I'm
sure there is a utility that will make this easy.
