Aha!  That did it.

Many thanks.   I've been using X for so long I'd half forgotten about virtual
consoles!

Unfortunately, the error message is that there isn't enough space to create
the swap file...I know that's not true - but I bet it needs consecutive
blocks of disk space or something.   I'll try de-fragging the DOS drive.
