Did you verify java is in your path?

~/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so -> symlinks to 
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

I also had to remove Kaffe to get java working. HTH
