It's the order that name lookups are done. When you go to a site, I
think the /etc/hosts file is the 1st or 2nd thing referenced in the order
of name lookups. So, if you set the domain to 127.0.0.1 in your
/etc/hosts file, the page should load faster and you will get 404 Error
messages on the page where the ads normally show up (but the rest of the
page will load normally).
I think there was an article in last month's Sys Admin magazine on
setting this up in BIND.
