Depending on how old the laptop is and any weird hardware issues, most
distros will work. On the quirkiest, I would go with Slackware. The
modules are all compiled and you can do some trial and error without
having to compile the modules all over again.
Slack is also a bit more friendly with setting hardware based on
chipsets rather than cards. I've had various video and audio issues that
were resolvable ONLY at the chipset level. Autodetection is getting
better, but if you are in a real spot because it won't detect your
system right, go Slack.
