Thanks for the Google reference, Jack!  The ping error message is 
corrected and, after a chmod, ping can be executed by all users.  Now 
internet shows 100% packet loss, while lan still shows good.  
Interesting note - while viewing ping file permissions, Konqueror showed 
that user/group was root, user had r-w-e, group and others had r---e 
permissions.  Sure wasn't so.  Ping only worked from root until I did a 
chmod +s on it.

Still no joy on the internet connection, but it's late & I'll try more 
tomorrow.
