Hmm...  3 votes for Postfix.  I think it must be worth checking out.

I'm very interested in your LDAP idea, though.  I had wondered if that 
was how the domains and user accounts were syncronized. 

So, do these pieces all come with LDAP support built in, or is it 
something you have to go through a lot of hassle to compile in?

I'll have to go do some googleing and see how this all works.
