In general, using SUSE, I always build one... so the ftp thing, I just
say no to.  On SUSE, you'll want to make sure you have the kernel
sources and ANYTIME YaST Online Update (YOU) updates your kernel,
you'll have to rebuilt the Nvidia modules... but first make sure
you  reboot with the new kernel in place, and go to /usr/src/linux
and do "make cloneconfig; make dep".. then execute the Nvidia
script to rebuild the Nvidia modules.

Simiarly, you'll need to rebuild VMware modeules (vmware-config.pl)
whenever the kernel changes.

I can't speak for the compile error, but there's a good chance
that the redhat kernel sources are not prepped for the kernel
you are running.  I don't know if RH has a "cloneconfig" target
or not..
