Al,
I would think long and hard before attempting to start a career in 
programming now.  For the most part our (software) industry is toast!!! 
  I would say that for the next 5 years the competition for new 
graduates getting into this industry will make it nearly impossible. 
The last figures I've read indicated that the industry has lost over 
300,000 jobs (about 10%) that aren't coming back.  You'll be competing 
with people having over 5-7 years of experience and I'm not sure there 
are any entry level jobs available anymore.  There's been a drop of 
30%-40% in salaries and consulting rates, and it's still dropping.
