You know I hear an awful lot of people bitching about how Red Hat has
abandoned or otherwise screwed the Open Source Developer community. The
funny thing is, I do not hear it so much from Open Source Developers,
usually just users who feel they should get it all for free. And these
users, if they would actually look at Fedora, and the community around it
would see that it is all being offered for free.
Sure Fedora does have some politics, things which need to be fixed, but it
is mostly back end things, that are being worked on. Generally speaking,
the OSS developer community has been fairly supportive of fedora. We feel
that it is a move in the right direction. I have personally contributed a
huge number of hours to Linux development. A large number of those hours
recently have been with the Fedora distribution. Red Hat does not pay me a
single penny, yet somehow I do not feel I have been screwed. In fact I feel
that they have given the community a better view of the process, more
input into the distribution (which in turn goes into RHEL), and better
access to resources which make my life easier.
