Goodness... didn't realize I'd get so much information on this - thank you
everybody!
After pondering the OS decision, I realized I hadn't looked in the most
important place - close to home.
Turns out Gentoo has an Alpha port, along with their usual excellent install
documentation. I'm going to give it a shot,
and if it doesn't work, go with FreeBSD.
