Howdy,
  Since you mention smartmedia and cf specifically, let me tell you how
my USB 2 in 1 reader/writer works.  If I have a cf card in it, it see
the cf card fine.  If I have a smartmedia card in, it only sees the
smartmedia card if there is no cf card loaded.  I am hoping you will get
lucky and find yours works this way, too.  That is better than not
working.
