I have a Dell laptop running XP Pro and VMware as well.

I had that, and other problems, with VMware 4.51, although not as frequent 
as you describe.  I backed off to 4.05 and everything cleared up.  I don't 
think that 4.51 is ready for prime time, if my experience and the VMware 
forums are any indication.
