It's hardly a "hack". It's merely an extension of
Oracle's crash recovery & transaction logging
features. It's rather mundane for a serious RDBMS
actually.

If you can adequately safeguard your data (and
new transactions) through scheduled outtages, then
Oracle is likely overpriced overkill for you.

Also, Queisce is not a backup facility in Oracle.
