It can and, in most of the residential situations I have worked with, 
does go through walls.  However, the composition of the wall is a factor 
here.  And no matter how flimsy the wall, there will be some loss of 
signal strength as the signal passes through it - that's just basic 
physics.

If you're trying to connect a host via wi-fi in the next room through a 
standard residential wall (6 inches thick or so), I wouldn't worry too 
much about it.  

You REALLY need line of sight when you are connecting two buildings via a 
bridge of some sort.  Laser is what I have seen used for this but it can 
also be an AP used as a bridge with a large gain antenna.
