Well, that's to be expected.  Most wired ethernet setups
go at 100Mbits/sec these days (100baseT) - you can bet 1Gbit/sec
too (although they perform more like 300Mbits/sec in practice).

The very best 802.11g wireless connections under the very
best of reception conditions can also manage 100Mbits/sec.
But 802.11b (not 'g') is an old standard - it manages
at most something like 6Mb/sec.

But those are the theoretical best numbers.  Practical
numbers could be a quarter of that.

You shouldn't expect even an 802.11g setup to consistently
perform as well as a 100baseT wired connection.

Hence, my house is wired for all the desktops (+server +firewall)
but has 802.11g for our laptops.

(These numbers are from memory - someone may want to correct
me if they know better).
