Howdy,
  Professor Anderson has been putting together inexpensive, well
designed kits for year.  I put together several of of his kits about 10
years ago and had a bit of fun.  For a low budget approach, I would use
his kit or just put a couple of ibuttons up there.  I have used those to
monitor the temperatures in my public storage unit.
