Shortly after writing that my google searches finally paid off, found a 
shareware util named syschk.  The laptop was a bit better than 
advertised.  It's a p166mmx with 96 megs of RAM and a 4 gig hdd, going 
to see if it will take a larger hdd, have a couple to try, now it's just 
time to wait for the cd-rom and drop a distro on it.
