does the box (1) also do DNS for the DHCP Addressess it assigns?
i.e. if you get 172.16.14.200 assigned to you, if you do a
host 172.16.14.200 does it get resolved by a local DNS?
if you don't have a local dns, you could run your own dns
and set up your clients to update the local DNS with their
IP Addresses.
