Wow,
  I knew grep was useful, but I did not know it could copy CDs.

  I regularly use grip (gnome rip) to make ogg files from the CDs I
own.  It is the best program I have found under Linux for ripping CDs. 
If your computer is shutting down, maybe your power supply is marginal. 
I sometimes find a CD that grip has a problem with.  But, I don't see
how it would shut the computer down.
