I'm far from an expert on subjects of video , but I've found a lot of 
video software assumes you are using an nVidia card.
Is this your case? If not, are you using frame buffering?

I use an ATI Radeon based All-in-Wonder and I have to compile FB into 
the kernel to get things like bootsplash and xine to work.
