What most sites are currently using is a zip code calculation algorithm that
approximates the distance between zip codes. Try a google search for "zip
code distance calculation" minus the quotes. It's a relatively safe way of
performing the task you are asking about and you should be able to find
scripts that are free, "as in beer," that will perform this function for
you.
If distance calculation are a must you can use one of these algorithms to
return the first 10 or so closest to the origin then using a mapping program
like mapquest get the actual distances between each of the top ten sources
to destination.
A few sites out there use this method.

On a similar note. Does anyone know of any map radius software for
Linux? I need to return nearest service center to a given zip code. And,
if possible display results on a map.
TIA
Bobby
