Exactomundo. But people still specialize in creating EDI formats
to/from mainframes. IBM's interest in Linux for financial and
logistical systems becomes obvious.

That's _exactly_ what I did at Fortune 100 company for 9 months.
Instead of using a provider of virtual circuits for EDI systems (who
charged by the usage) for "non-real-time" financial or logistical
transaction, my system used PGP over the Internet to transfer EDI files.
E.g., Foods/goods for a Disney restaurant/store, positive pay
verification for bank accounts, etc...
Perl did the job nicely whenever I had to write something custom.
