Howdy,
If you have this concern, I suggest you look at TextMaker. It is a
Linux/FreeBSD word processor that is the most compatible one I have
found. I regularly exchange documents with Microsoft Word users.
Before TextMaker, I would get complaints about why I had changed the
format of the document. With TextMaker, they don't see any difference.
There is a slightly reduced version of TextMaker bundled wth SuSE 9.1
that should be good to try. There is a demo version available for
download, but it is pretty useless. The down-loadable version of
TextMaker won't write .doc files.
I have not gotten any documents in the new MS XML format. I seem to
recall they claimed a patent on some concept in they format and are
trying to keep it closed. So, those might be a problem.
One last comment. If you are just sending a file to a MS word user
and you don't want to have to explain .rtf format, which I also use
normally, just save the document as an html file. rename it to .doc and
MS word will open it and the user will never notice. I was surprise the
first time I saw this, but it works.
Good luck,
Ralph
