On some lists, the subject lines of off-topic posts are prefixed with
"[OT]".  This appears to have the dual effect of not frustrating people
who hate off-topic posts (they can add a simple procmail recipe), and of
helping OT threads wither away more quickly (since fewer people see
them).  I don't recall if it's been discussed before, but does anyone
think we should foster this convention on the NTLUG list?
