On 2.6 kernels (SL9, FC2, MDK10, etc...), try using "miitool" to force
speed/duplex, among other settings.

I installed FC2 on a system for Brian Ashe and found to get stability
with a 3com card, I had to switch into either 10Base-T/Full or
100Base-T/Half.

We replaced the NIC and had no further issues.

There are just too many variants out there for all the driver developers
to catch. There is no more proof of this than when the vendors
themselves release different drivers for the _same_model_, but different
revisions, and they are incompatible -- but the _single_ Linux driver
works for both.
