SUSE offers the possibility to install SUSE LINUX free of charge
directly from the FTP server. The function scope of FTP versions is
virtually the same as that of the "normal" version. Merely a few program
packages have been excluded due to license reasons. The installation
support is not included either.

Beginning the ftp install is not for the faint of heart - read the
installation readme-ftp.txt and find yourself an article to use as a
guide - once the installation starts in earnest, it is nearly identical
to any other CD/DVD install.
re:upgrade path - not had good experience with big leap upgrades in the
past - eventually wind up needing to clean up the detritus left in the
wake. That having been said, if it was a Debian based distro, it'd
probably work out fine.... :) If you have a choice, just install FC2 and
migrate your customizations from RH9, piecemeal (of course, if it's a
multiuser server, this won't be practical).
