Howdy,
If you don't mind spending money, the best tool for this job is
probably SpinRite from Gibson Research. www.grc.com
The earlier version worked only on FAT filesystems or empty disks.
They recently released a new version that works with just about any IDE
or SCSI disk. The system used for testing does need to be a x86 machine
because the tool boots from a floppy, cd or USB key with FreeDOS. I
have the new version and it does this kind of testing and more. I have
tested it with a Linux filesystem and it worked just like they said.
