Thanks guys. It worked like a charm.
I had a couple of misses with trying to install on the parions, as in 
/dev/hda1 and /dev/hda3, but then I finally got the drive as in /dev/hda 
it ws working on the next boot and everything else intact.
Sending this mail from my netscape and not 98.

But mail follows for getting my Westell Wire speed DSL on USB to start 
working - installation For which this whole thing started.
Need to do some research first.
