I'll second the LSI MegaRaid cards.. Never, ever had an issue.

Subject: Re: [NTLUG:Discuss] Best SCSI RAID for Linux
At the company I work for, we have had a lot of trouble using various
Adaptec SCSI Raid cards that use the aacraid driver. Our problem began
when we got a server from Dell. Basically (if I remember the problem
correctly), during heavy disk access the card can time out and basically
go to sleep and quit out on you. (That isn't the exact technical
description of the problem, just a paraphrase of what I can remember See
this bug report:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=92129 ) I have
seen the issue blamed on everything from firmware on the cards and/or
drives themselves to the aacraid implementation. We saw this issue with
the Dell Perc 4/Di (which is basically a rebranded Adaptec card) and the
Adaptec 2200.
On the other hand, we have had great success with LSI MegaRaid cards and
that is now almost exclusively what we use. Performance is great
(although we have never done any official benchmarks, it is just one of
those "it feels fast" things) and we have never had any compatibility
issues with the driver in the 2.4 or 2.6 kernels. The way we finally
solved our Dell server issue was to get them to send us an LSI card.
Ever since we put it in, we haven't had a single problem with that
server. Hope that helps.
