Is this a 501c3 thing? Or just an accepted rule here?

Agreed, although helpful members should let them know they at least
provide products/services that are directly requested for.
Even on list IMHO, but I'm not one to say or influence.

Beware of advocates who justify their preference not in terms of
what they like about their "choice," but what they did not like
about another option. Such advocacy is more hurtful than helpful.
