They mean all ECC memory that Dell sells is 533MHz.

Exactly.  That's how I found out Dell wouldn't certify Linux with more
than 128MB of RAM in 2000.

Not good when the #1 reason Intel gave Dell money to start selling Linux
as a standard OS option on the desktop was because they polled the
semiconductor industry and promised 100,000 "high-end configured"
systems per year.  This was in wake of the 1999 SVLUG meeting where
Intel attended and found all the major SIA players there.

I tried to order a P3-500MHz with 1.5GB of RAM to no avail.  They would
only sell me a P2-300MHz with 128MB of RAM because "that's all Linux
supports."

Beware of advocates who justify their preference not in terms of
what they like about their "choice," but what they did not like
about another option.  Such advocacy is more hurtful than helpful.
