Alas, it can be a "great" way to reach I-40 if you like slowing down
every 15-20 minutes for each little town, one or two still have some
with nasty little speed traps. Small towns need the revenue!

An alternative would be to take I-35 up to OK City (go around to the west
by way of one of the loops instead of going downtown OKC) and then take
I-40 west towards Amarillo. I know it looks longer on the maps and, by
distance, it is. Time-wise, there isn't much difference 'tween the two
(but maybe just a tad longer via OKC) since you have interstate hwy the
whole way and don't have to stop for every podunk little town along the
Red River.

I have outlaws, er... inlaws, up in Amarillo and the wife and I have
experimented with each route.

I still like to do the 287 route 'cause I like podunk little towns and
the view of "nothing-ness" of the region. :-) Plus we know people in
some of those podunk little towns too and we'll stop by, time permitting.

Naturally, your mileage may vary... and your choice may depend on whether
you're optimizing for ease of driving, time, or distance. If you're
a railfan there's usually lots of great looking "power" running along
US-287 the closer you git to the panhandle and Amarillo.

Have a good trip!
