[NTLUG:Discuss] Linux on Laptop

I got the really cheapy Toshiba Satellite M35X-S104(I think? - Celeron M 1.4GHz, i852/855GM, 256MB, 40GB)
for $899-400 instant rebate at Best Buy by freezing my butt off from 2am to 6am the day after Thanksgiving.

I wasn't expecting much but Red Hat's newer version 4 series (kernel 2.6, GCC 3.4, GLibC 2.3), namely Fedora Core 3 (CL4.1),
detected and handled everything.
All thanx to kernel 2.6 ACPI support and newer Red Hat attention to detail in Kudzu and other programs.
This includes Kudzu identifying and configuring the i852 UMA main-video memory usage on first boot (among other things).
I'm sure the installer/
boot-run-time configuration programs in other distros do the same.

The only things that don't work are the software modem (but Intel has a driver I haven't tried yet),
and the power management/suspend.
I loaded the Toshiba tools but the kernel driver doesn't support my model (maybe it's just an OEM/ID change in the code?).
Everything else works, audio, USB, FireWire, CardBus/PCMCIA, 10/100, etc...
It even shuts down cleanly when I press the power button.

It all depends on the particular model and what's inside it.

It could could be a total breeze, complete torture or anywhere in between.

You just need to search the web for specs and others that have used
the particular model of laptop that you're working with.
