Yes.  That fixed it.  I also discovered that giving mem=512M as a boot 
argument will also fix it, although that sort of defeats the purpose of more 
memory.  But then I am in the process of decomissioning this drive anyway.  I 
was setting up a new drive that would dual boot into XP and wanted to upgrade 
some hardware before I actually activated it.

Incidentally the frame buffer problem occured on Mandrake 9.1 using kernel 
version 2.4.21.0.13.  I also tried Suse 9.1 using a 2.6 kernel and this 
problem didn't happen.
