first- thanks to those of you who responded.

here's what i've discovered:

1. simply inserting a return-path header into the message doesn't work. if the
return-path address is NOT the uid of the porgram sending the mail, sendmail
replaces the address with the uid of the sending program.

2. the -f flag used like so:

`sendmail -fdeliveryerrors at abc.com` DOES work and, in fact will override an
existing return-path header.

BUT if the sending uid is not in the trusted-user file in /etc/mail, sendmail
adds an x-authentication-warning header. adding the uid to trusted-users fixes this.

you learn something new every day.....
