It certainly sounds like the identical problem.  Since I had my
system download patches from SuSE's server after installation, it's
very possible that my 9.1 system has essentially identical software to
your 9.2 system.

I havn't noticed it happening specifically with shift keys - but I
certainly wasn't using the control key at the time it last failed. I
was midway through typing a paragraph just like this one when it locked
up the last time.

Yep - exactly.

So the big question is:  Do you have nVidia graphics drivers - and if
so, what version?

Those drivers don't run when X isn't running - and...

That would fit with the nVidia theory - presumably her laptop
doesn't have an nVidia 3D chipset with 3D drivers loaded.
