Now that is doable but there is a slight security risk to it.
First you'll need to set the chvt command suid for root after the test
you will want to remove the suid bit.
chmod 4755 /usr/bin/chvt
Nows make a click-able icon on the desktop for some non-kde or gnome
application (I used xterm). Then change the program that is run to chvt
1 instead of the program originally created.
Now test it, you should find yourself in the text mode on console 1, use
control ALt F7 to return to X. Now when the problem happens click the
icon and see what happens.
When you are done testing remove the suid bit from chvt
chmod 755 /usr/bin/chvt
