Alright... several things.

1. desktop on the boot line (menu.lst)

This is for the latency patches... it's supposed to help with
multimedia in particular.. HOWEVER, in practice, it simply messes
up WAY too many drivers.  Can cause a WORLD of headaches... IMHO,
this should NOT be the default.  I've never seen the desktop
option help.. only hinder.

2. splash=0 vga=normal on the boot line (menu.lst)

The framebuffer can certainly cause issues (really depends on the
card).  In particular fbdev is very buggy.  I've had good luck
with vesa... but in general, if you're plan is to run an
accelerated driver once into X11, I'd disable the framebuffer'd
boot up... just so it's not an unwelcome variable.
